New Rosacea Medication Available

Rosacea sufferers may be interested to know that a new oral medication is available in Canada called Apprilon. As the only once-a-day oral treatment for papular pustular rosacea, it is a modified release doxycycline 40 mg capsule that has good efficacy and very low side effects. It acts as an anti-inflammatory medication and not an antibiotic, thus minimizing the risk of antibiotic resistance.

It may seem like we talk about rosacea and redness a lot. The fact is, we do: these chronic skin conditions affect a large portion of our patients who come to us seeking help for their red, irritated skin.

There are countless people who haven’t correctly identified that they are experiencing rosacea. You may have a friend or family member who is struggling with uncomfortably red skin. Do they suffer from rosacea? Besides sending them to a dermatologist, here are the facts you can share:

Home Aesthetic Devices: What to Consider

In the last few years, a market for consumer-grade aesthetic devices for home use has emerged. The manufacturers of these devices advertise that they will help an individual treat their own acne, grow or remove hair, or rejuvenate their skin in the comfort of their own home without the aid of a professional.

“The market is quite burgeoning. It is very novel, emerging in the last four or five years,” says Dr. Jason Rivers, practicing dermatologist at Pacific Dermaesthetics in Vancouver. “There are literally thousands of devices that you can buy for home use.”

Cosmeceuticals: What Are They?

This article is the first in a series on the world of cosmeceutical skin care products, aimed to keep our patients better informed when shopping for skin products.

The aesthetic industry has undergone extraordinary growth over the past decade, with much of the expansion fuelled by an aging population wanting to maintain healthy skin and a youthful appearance. With active lifestyles and professional careers, many consumers no longer view a visit to the spa as essential to experience pampering that rejuvenates their skin. Hectic lives demand simplicity in skin care routines and these savvy customers are exploring options that are cost-effective, non-invasive, multifunctional and able to deliver visible results.

Vascular Lasers: What Can They Do?

The word “vascular” refers to blood vessels, and that’s exactly what this type of laser does: it targets superficial red and bluish vessels in the skin.

Most vascular skin conditions involve large or matted blood vessels on the face or legs. These vessels are often the result of sun damage, aging, pregnancy or childbirth, but they may be related to other dermatological issues such as rosacea or as part of a birthmark.

Mind Your Moles Refresher

We have all heard it umpteen times: sun safety tips such as “wear sunscreen daily” and reminders to check your skin for any noticeable changes—especially if you are at risk for skin cancer. But it’s estimated that only one in five people wears sunscreen properly on a daily basis. And for those of us with moles, it’s likely that we don’t get our skin checked at least once a year by our family doctor.

With summer rumoured to be right around the corner, and Sun Awareness Week just passed, here is a quick refresher on moles and skin cancer risks.

Superior Sunscreens

If you are becoming more wary of the quality of sunscreen that you’re wearing, wondering what chemicals are in it or if it’s even doing a decent job, we have a selection of high-quality sunscreens for you to peruse.

Read our article about Winter Sun and you’ll be reminded that we should wear sunscreen on exposed skin (particularly the face) at all times. And if you have a male partner, you’ll need to remind him to wear sunscreen as well, especially as he heads outdoors to play golf, go skiing on a sunny day or doing spring yard work.

Why Botox Requires Licensed Doctors

CBC News recently went undercover to investigate reports that unlicensed practitioners are selling Botox. These practitioners run spas and medical spas ("medi-spas") in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, and advertise that a doctor will administer the Botox injection. However, at the time of treatment patients are surprised to find out that the injector is either not licensed by Botox, and/or there is no licensed medical doctor available.

Read the article for the full story on unlicensed practitioners injecting Botox.
