Stretch Marks
What are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks are thin, lineal scars (striae) on the skin that develop after rapid growth or weight gain. The cause may be related to hormonal changes that affect the dermis (middle layer of skin) of the skin and prevent the formation of collagen and elastin fibres. When the skin is stretched with this less supportive structure, small tears occur in the dermis, creating stretch marks.
The colour of stretch marks varies. Newer scars tend to be red or purple, gradually fading to a white or silver colour.Stretch marks are commonly found on the abdominal area, thighs, hips, breasts, lower back or upper arms – areas that are prone to change shape rapidly through pregnancy, bodybuilding, weight gain or weight loss.
What are the Side Effects?
The main consequence of stretch marks is that they can be cosmetically unappealing. Large visible areas of striae on the body cause many people to be self-conscious of their skin, covering up the area even during the hot summer months.Types of Treatment
There are several different methods that claim to treat stretch marks. But other than surgical removal, there is no solution that will completely eradicate stretch marks. The more successful methods are able to visibly improve the appearance of stretch marks by gently resurfacing the skin and stimulating collagen growth.
- Topical Cream – There are several types of creams on the market, mainly available at the cosmetics counter. Creams are not proven to significantly reduce the appearance of stretch marks, but may hydrate the skin, assisting in minimizing their appearance temporarily.
- Vascular Lasers – These lasers, such as the Gemini or Vbeam, utilize a wavelength that is absorbed by the blood vessels in the scar, effectively removing them. It also stimulates the dermis, activating the collagen-producing cells. This process helps improve skin texture, softens lines and tightens the skin. Vascular lasers are best for helping the redness of new striae fade and make the area less noticeable.
- Fraxel® Laser Treatment – We have observed the most effective treatment for older stretch marks to be the Fraxel laser. The laser penetrates the dermis to stimulate new collagen growth, and the thickening of the new collagen plumps the skin to fill the stretch mark. The Fraxel laser can also reduce the red/purple colour of newer scars.
A series of five to six laser stretch mark treatments can visibly improve their appearance. The stretch marks will continue to improve up to six months after the last treatment.
