Canadian Launch of LipoSonixTM Held at Pacific Dermaesthetics
On September 12, 2009, an advanced ultrasound technology called LipoSonix was launched in Canada at the Pacific Dermaesthetics offices. "Medicis Aesthetics Canada is excited to be working with Pacific Dermaesthetics to assist in the national launch of our newest acquisition, the LipoSonix, a new body sculpting treatment, " stated Amy McLean, Associate Director of Business Development in Canada. "Medicis chose to partner with Pacific Dermaesthetics because they are committed to providing their patients with state of the art, scientifically proven therapies in a private and comfortable setting." As a result, Pacific Dermaesthetics is the first Canadian company to own the machine and utilize the procedure.

What is LipoSonix?
This new treatment offers nonsurgical body contouring by using high intensity focused ultrasound technology to effectively target and permanently destroy abdominal fat just beneath the skin. LipoSonix is completed in a one-hour treatment with little or no downtime. Results are usually seen 8 to 12 weeks following the treatment; and an average of 2.8 cm (1.1") in waist circumference reduction is typical after the one treatment. Individual results may vary.

The LipoSonix technology was developed over a period of nine years by leading engineers, ultrasound experts and physicians; and treatments are already in use in Europe. LipoSonix was cleared by Health Canada on September 8 and the first Canadian treatment was performed at Pacific Dermaesthetics on September 11. "Non-invasive body contouring is the new frontier of cosmetic procedures," says Dr. Jason Rivers. "We believe that the LipoSonix technology has solid scientific evidence of results to justify its inclusion into our practice."

Who Should Consider LipoSonix?
The LipoSonix treatment is designed for patients who are of average weight or slightly overweight; and want to reduce stubborn abdominal fat. The procedure is not a way to reduce a large amount of fat or to lose weight. While it isn't a replacement for liposuction surgery, LipoSonix's non-invasive nature makes it an appealing alternative body contouring procedure.

Appropriate candidates for the treatment have the following in common:

  • Have unwanted areas of stubborn abdominal fat
  • Can pinch at least 2.5 cm (1") of abdominal fat
  • Want to lose a dress or pant size
  • Are in good overall health
• Have good skin tone

If you share these qualities, the LipoSonix treatment may be for you. Contact our office at 604.682.SKIN to find out more.

Mole Mapping
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. In Canada, malignant melanomas account for 5% of the three types of skin cancers and are the type most likely to be fatal. Early detection of skin cancer is the best way to cure and survive.

If you have a tendency to develop freckles, spots and moles during the summer, fall is the perfect time to have a mole mapping procedure. Mole mapping is a great tool for people at risk for melanoma and other skin cancers as well as for people who want to monitor changes in their skin.
Pacific Dermaesthetics has purchased the first computerized total body mole mapping system in Canada, called FotoFinder. This system helps your physician to create an accurate set of photos of all your moles and spots.

How it Works
Using a camera that is connected to a computer, your doctor will take high-resolution photographs that create a baseline reference of the location and appearance of your moles. This photography is completed in about 10 minutes. All the photos are transferred at once to the doctor's database.

At a follow-up visit your doctor takes another set of mole mapping photos and is now able to compare your moles with the photos from your initial visit. The computer helps your doctor immediately find any new or changed moles on your body.

Key Benefits

  • High resolution photography allows very close monitoring of moles
  • Database storage of photos provides instant reference to any new or changed moles
  • Digital dermoscopy allows comparison at up to 70x magnification
• CD or print outs of your mole mapping will be given to you for self-examination at home

Through utilizing mole mapping, for the first time patients with multiple moles can feel reassured that no changed or new mole has been missed.
